The successful takedown of the Rustock botnet cut the volume of spam across the world by one-third, according to Symantec’s [...]

The successful takedown of the Rustock botnet cut the volume of spam across the world by one-third, according to Symantec’s March 2011 MessageLabs Intelligence Report.

By the end of last year, the notorious botnet was responsible for sending out 44 billion spam messages per day, or more than 47 percent of the world’s total output, making it the leading purveyor of spam. Though Rustock lost some steam this year, it still managed to send out more than 13 billion daily spam e-mails earlier this month prior to its takedown, said Symantec.

But legal actions by Microsoft and raids by federal law enforcement managed to cut off the network just a couple of weeks ago. As a result, the number of overall global spam messages dropped to around 33 billion per day, compared with 52 billion the prior week.

Such botnets typically have a nasty habit of bouncing back, but Symantec isn’t sure this one will be able to revive.

“It remains to be seen whether the criminals behind Rustock will be able to recover from this coordinated effort against what has become one of the most technically sophisticated botnets in recent years,” MessageLabs Intelligence senior analyst Paul Wood said in a statement. “Rustock has been a significant part of the botnet and malware landscape since January 2006, much longer than many of its contemporaries.”

Of course, when one spam purveyor goes down, others usually pop up to fill the gap. With Rustock off the radar, Bagle has now become the most active spambot in 2011 so far, according to Symantec. Bagle, which has been around for a number of years, has been sending out more than 8 billion junk e-mails per day since the end of last year, most of them linked to pharmaceutical products, said the report.

Voxalis now has a full range of 0333 telephone numbers available to both new and existing customers. The new 03 number range will cost the same as calls to geographic numbers, and be included as part of any inclusive call minutes or discount schemes for geographic calls. This will apply to calls form any line and no revenue sharing will be permitted on calls to 03 numbers.

The introduction of 03 numbers will enable Voxalis customers to offer consumers a single national point of contact without making additional charges for the service. This should give consumers the confidence about calling 03 and OFCOM expects public services and many others to view 03 numbers as more appropriate than chargeable 08 numbers.

The latest global business VoIP services forecasts from ABI Research shows that the value of the overall market, which includes VoIP integrated access, SIP trunking, Hosted IP PBX/IP Centrex and managed IP PBX services, is set to double over the next five years, to exceed $20 billion by 2015. Whether you believe the forecasts or not the one common theme is that the market has changed and SIP trunking and Hosted IP PBX is set to overtake traditional PSTN and PBX sales. SIP and Hosted IP is the future.

Hosted IP PBX has come into the business telephone mainstream. For small companies starting out with only a few extensions and no IT manager to large multi-site organisations looking for inter-site communication or for companies who have decentralised their telecommunications services, Hosted IP PBX represents a significant opportunity to structure and run a service, save money and improve efficiency.

In order to better support our growing customer base, Malik Ahmed has recently joined the technical support team here at Voxalis. With a First Class computer science degree and previous experience in technical support Malik is a valuable addition to Voxalis. The appointment of Malik underlines Voxalis’ commitment to technical and service excellence.

“In addition to the day to day support of customers, I will also be working with Daniel Wilson (Voxalis Technical Director) to consolidate some of the internal systems used by Voxalis.” says Malik. “This will make some of the processes quicker and easier than before, resulting in a better experience for colleagues and customers alike. Although a long term project, the ground work has already started with some of the file based storage being migrated to a relational database.”

Voxalis Now Live on WLR3

WLR3 is the latest development from the BT Openreach Wholesale Line Rental portfolio. The Wholesale Line Rental product enables service providers to resell BT Openreach lines to end users. WLR3 has been designed to enhance the order and fault management experience, giving service providers direct and instant access to BT Openreach back office systems. Service Providers can now pre-qualify orders to minimise the risk of rejection, and have access to real time appointing when booking engineer visits.

The challenge of switching to WLR3 involved selecting a partner to provide an interface to the BT Openreach systems and migrating the customer base from the old WLR2 product. Voxalis chose to work with Singularity, a market leading WLR3 third party integrator, to provide this interface. Following the successful migration of our customer base, Voxalis has been live on WLR3 since early January 2011.

“WLR3 and Singularity have further improved our service capabilities to both new and existing customers.” Nicola Cheema, Voxalis Operations Manager.
